New Delhi: Over seven months since the nationwide Covid-19 vaccination rolled out in India, the mass inoculation programme has achieved a major milestone as half the country’s adult population has received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed on Thursday.
“50 per cent of the population above 18 years have received one dose of the Covid-19 vaccines while 15 per cent of this group have taken both the shots,” Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary, MoH&FW stated during a press briefing.
Meanwhile, 100 per cent of frontline workers have received the first dose and the second dose have been administered among 79 per cent of individuals under this subgroup, the official added.
The union health ministry also said that 99 per cent of healthcare workers are immunized with the first dose whereas 83 per cent of them have received the second so far.
“46.6 crores first dose and 13.7 crores second dose have been administered in the country under nationwide vaccination program against Covid-19. Overall, 60.39 crore shots have been given so far,” Bhushan added.
The union ministry also said the pace of vaccination has also improved drastically with each month passing. “Our average monthly vaccination rate was 2.35 lakh per day when we started in January, which is now scaled up to 52.16 lakh per day in August,” he shared showing data.
India has rolled out its immunisation program against Covid-19 on January 16.
