New Delhi: Congress party on Friday slammed the BJP governments at the center and in Uttar Pradesh, and questioned why Ashish Mishra, who was allegedly involved in the killing of four farmers and a journalist in Lakhimpur of Uttar Pradesh, has not been arrested yet.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala on Friday questioned why the Uttar Pradesh police is sending notices to Ashish, son of Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, instead of arresting him. He mentioned that the MoS also has been named in a murder case.
“Government is standing with criminals who murder democracy. If the father of a criminal is the minister of state for home, what would happen to law and order in the country,” Surjewala said.
He also mentioned a murder case in which Ajay Mishra has been named.
Mishra had been an accused in a murder case in 2000, and was acquitted in 2004. The family of victim subsequently filed an appeal in the Allahabad High Court, and the case is still sub-judice.
Surjewala took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said, “When former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee asked you to follow ‘rajdharm’ (duty of the ruler), he did not follow him. At least now the Prime Minister should fulfill his duty”.
Taking note of the Supreme Court’s observations during the hearing in the case of violence in Lakhimpur Kheri, the Congress leader said even the court has lost faith on the government.
Four farmers and a journalist were killed after cars from the convoy of Mishra, one of which is registered in the name of the Minister, ran over the farmers who were returning from a protest.
Ashish Mishra was allegedly involved in the incident and was called for questioning by the police on Friday. He however did not turn up and a fresh notice has been issued calling him for questioning on Saturday.
