Top Jaish Militant killed in Tral

Srinagar: One of the top most wanted local Jaish-e-Mohammad militant was killed in a gunfight in South Kashmir’s Awantipora sub district on Wednesday, police said.

The Jaish commander, identified as Shams-ud-Din Sofi alias Sham Sofi, was killed a day after five militants were killed in two gunfights in Shopian district.

The latest gunfight broke at Tilwani Mohalla Tral when a joint team of security forces launched a cordon and search operation following an input about the presence of militants.

“During the search operation, as the presence of terrorists was ascertained, and they were given repeated opportunities to surrender; but they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, one terrorist was killed. He has been identified as Sham Sofi, a top commander of proscribed terror outfit JeM,” a police spokesman in Srinagar said.

He said the slain militant was active since June 2019. “He was among the most wanted terrorists operating in the valley,” the spokesman added.

Police said the slain militant was first arrested in 2004 and detained under Public Safety Act.

“He was also involved in providing logistic support, shelter to the active terrorists operating in Tral area before joining terror fold. He was also involved in motivating local youth to join terrorism,” the spokesman said.

Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of the encounter.
