Kandahar: Multiple explosions ripped through a Shiite mosque in Kandahar during prayers on Friday, killing over 30 people and leaving 50 others injured, reports said. It’s the second Shiite mosque to be targeted on a successive Friday in Afghanistan.
Around three successive explosions were reported in the Fatimieh Mosque in Imam Bargah area of District 1 of Kandahar city, Afghanistan’s second largest city after Kabul.
The explosions took place during Friday prayers. The mosque is located in a Persian speaking neighbourhood of the predominantly Pashtun Kandahar city.
Videos and pictures on social media showed bodies lying strewn in the mosque premises.
No group has yet claimed responsibility.
The attack comes exactly a week after a massive suicide explosion ripped through a Shiite mosque in Kunduz, killing over 100 people and leaving an equal number injured.
The Islamic State-Khorasan terror outfit claimed responsibility for the Kunduz mosque bombing.
