Jammu: Indian Army on Saturday pressed elite para commandos into service to take on a group of heavily-armed terrorists along the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir as the gun battle in the dense forest entered the sixth day.
Army on Friday confirmed India has lost seven soldiers, including one Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) since October 11 when the terrorists launched the offensive against the forces, killing five on the very first day.
There was fresh exchange of fire in Bhata Dhurian village of Mendhar sub division on Saturday.
Official sources said that a group of para commandos joined the action in the dense forests of Mendhar to flush out the terrorists, who have been continuously changing hideouts.
Sources said helicopters have been pressed into action. They said searches have also been intensified to find one JCO allegedly missing since Thursday evening, when gunfight erupted between armed terrorists and security forces in Nar Khas forest area in which the two riflemen from Uttarakhand were killed.
Official confirmation from the Army regarding the ‘missing’ JCO is still awaited.
Traffic has been suspended along the highway close to the encounter site.
