Iran reports 1,171 more COVID-19 cases, 6,201,467 in total

Tehran: Iran’s Health Ministry on Wednesday reported 1,171 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country’s total infections to 6,201,467.

The pandemic also claimed 42 lives in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 131,778, said an update by Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education.

A total of 6,045,890 people have recovered from the disease or been discharged from hospitals across the country, while 2,352 remain in intensive care units, according to the ministry.

By Wednesday, 59,992,876 Iranians have received their first doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and 52,344,829 of them have taken two jabs. Meanwhile, 9,081,671 people in the country have received their booster shots.

The report added that 42,484,271 tests have so far been carried out across the country.

Iran reported its first case of the Omicron COVID-19 variant on Dec. 19. According to the latest data released on Tuesday, 244 cases of the Omicron strain have been detected throughout the country.
