United Nations: The United States must stop hindering the work of the UN Security Council to address alleged war crimes committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip, Cuban Ambassador to the United Nations Gerardo Penalver Portal said on Monday.
“The United States, which has guaranteed criminal impunity for this genocide, must stop hindering the work of the Security Council in this domain,” Portal said.
The ambassador made the comments during a UN General Assembly briefing on the situation in Gaza.
Portal explained that Israel is ignoring all UN resolutions and all of its obligations as an occupying power under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
“These are war crimes and crimes against humanity, which must stop now,” Portal said.
The ambassador also noted that indiscriminate attacks on civilians and crucial infrastructure constitute collective punishment and violate international law.
There must be an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas, Portal said.
Continued inaction on the matter will cost additional innocent lives, Portal added.
Israel’s bombardment and invasion of Gaza has resulted in the death of 12,000 residents and the wounding of 30,000 others.
