Police Officers & Jawans asked to strictly follow the SOPs to avoid attacks: ADGP

Srinagar: Additional Director General of Police, Law and Order Vijay Kumar on Friday said that police officers and jawans have been asked to strictly follow the standard operation procedures (SOPs) to ensure their safety and security while on leave or on duty.
Kumar was talking to reporters on the sidelines of a wreath laying ceremony of slain police Inspector Masroor Ahmed Wani, who died at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi on Thursday, over a month after he was shot in Srinagar’s Eidgah ground while playing cricket.
The wreath laying ceremony was held at District Police Lines Srinagar which was attended by senior civil and police officers.
“An SOP was issued last year and every police officer and jawan was told that when they are on leave or at home or outside what to do. ..But there are deficiencies sometimes and the consequences of which we have to bear ,” said Kumar .
He said fresh directions have been issued to police officers to ensure when they meet jawans and they are repeatedly told to follow the SOP in letter and spirit while on leave or on duty .
Kumar said attackers involved in Wani’s killing would be eliminated or arrested soon.
“It is not advisable not to reveal about the ongoing investigations,” he said, adding that had an input of an attack on the day Inspector Wani was shot at.
He said the probe of killing of Police Inspector Wani has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
“The case has been given to the NIA. The NIA and JK Police will investigate it jointly,” the ADGP said.
Meanwhile, emotional scenes were witnessed when the body of the slain officer reached home where neighbours, relatives, and friends had gathered. The funeral prayers was attended by a large number of mourners at Eidgah area.
The neighbours of Wani described him as a man who always remained grounded. The officer is survived by his parents and wife who is expecting her first child.
