nCoV: 250 more ICU beds to be added at DRDO-run Covid Care hospital in Delhi

New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) will add another 250 ICU beds with ventilators at its e Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Covid Care hospital in Delhi cantonment by next three days, an official said.

While speaking with UNI, the official said that the hospital was reopened on Monday morning amid alarming surge in Coronavirus cases in the National Capital with 250 ICU beds housing all necessary facilities to treat critical Covid-19 patients. By afternoon it was filled with patients.

With an addition of 250 beds, the total number of ICU beds at the hospital, will go up to 500. This make-shift, fully air-conditioner hospital was built by the Defence research wing in record time of 12 days with assistance from the armed forces, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Tata Trust.

Free treatment and food will be provided to the patients and anybody infected with disease, can be admitted to the hospital.

The Covid Care Centre was made operational on Monday with medical teams from Armed Force Medical Service (AFMS) and two doctors from Central Armed Police Forces (CRPF) and began treating Covid patient free of cost.

Besides, the Delhi hospital, the DRDO has been working on setting up similar facilities in Ahmadabad, Lucknow and in Bihar on the behest of the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The Covid Care Hospital in the cantt area was opened with 1,000 ICU beds along with ventilators in July last year when the medical infrastructure was crippled because of high number of Covid cases in Delhi.

Another state owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is also setting up two Covid care facilities at Lucknow and Nasik in Maharashtra after setting up one in Bengaluru.
