China approves HIV drug for Covid patients

Beijing: China’s medical products administration approved on Monday the use of a locally made anti-HIV drug, Azvudine, in Covid-19 patients.

“On July 25, the administration … conditionally approved the request to expand the list of indications for the use of oral treatment Azvudine, produced by Henan Genuine Biotech Co., Ltd, to include SARS-CoV-2,” it said.

The pill will be used to treat adult patients with “normal type” COVID-19 infection, which manifests itself through high temperature and lung inflammation.

Azvudine is an antiviral drug developed to treat Hepatitis C. It also proved to inhibit the replication of human immunodeficiency virus and was approved last year for treatment of HIV patients in China.
