2 militants killed in Kashmir, 2nd encounter in less than 24 hrs

Srinagar: Security forces shot dead two newly recruited militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba in a gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Thursday morning, police said.

This is the second encounter in Kashmir in less than 24 hours.

The gunfight broke out at Wanigam Kreeri area Baramulla during a cordon and a search operation which was launched by joint forces following an input about militant presence.

“During the search operation, as the joint search party approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorist fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, 2 local terrorists linked with proscribed terrorist outfit LeT were killed,” a police spokesman said.

Additional Director General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar identified the slain as Shakir Majid Najar and Hanan Ahmad Seh, both residents of south Kashmir’s Shopian district

“Both joined terrorism in the month of March 2023,” he said.

Kumar termed the elimination of two militants operation as a “big success”

“ They were planning to carry out terrorist attack in the area,” ADGP said.

Police said incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including an AK 47 rifle and a pistol were recovered.

Yesterday, two unidentified militants were killed as security forces foiled an infiltration bid in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

The security forces have been put on a high alert in the wake of intelligence inputs that militants may carry out an attack in Jammu and Kashmir in next few days.
Kashmir is gearing to host the high profile G20 meet in Srinagar later this month. The G20 meeting in Kashmir will be the first major international event in J&K since August 5, 2019, when the erstwhile state was divided into two UTs — J&K and Ladakh — and its special status was revoked. Security agencies have decided to deploy Marine Commandos (MARCOS) and National Security Guard (NSG) of the Army to secure the high profile meet.
