Encounter breaks out in Sopore

Srinagar: An encounter broke out between security forces and militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore sub-district Thursday evening, police said.

The counter-terror operation, jointly conducted by J&K police, Indian Army and CRPF, is currently underway in the Check Mohalla Nowpora in Sopore.

“An #encounter has started at Check Mohalla Nowpora in the area of PD #Sopore. Police & security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow.@JmuKmrPolice,” police said in a post on X.
There are no reports of any casualty so far on either side.
Sources said two militants are believed to be trapped in the area. Additional forces have been rushed to the area to ensure a tight cordon in the area.

This is the second gun battle in as many days in Kashmir. On Wednesday militants and security forces exchanged fire for a brief period in Bandipora district of north Kashmir that left two soldiers wounded. The massive combing operation to trace the militants in the forest area of Bandipora continued on Thursday.
Meanwhile, a suspected militant Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was arrested in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Police said Farooq Ahmed Khokar, a resident of Kalsi Kamalkoot was arrested on a specific input about militant movement in Uri Mandayan area.
Police said a pistol, two magazines and 20 rounds was recovered from his possession.
