It was a call for help that resonated from the heights of the Himalayas, a plea that reached the newly independent Indian Government, summoning our Armed forces to protect and preserve the sovereignty of the state. Thus, commenced the Battle of Badgam, a chapter in history that would forever alter the course of the 1947-48 War. Today, as we celebrate Shaurya Diwas, we pay our profound respects to the valiant heroes who rewrote history with their unyielding courage and selfless sacrifices.

The year 1947 heralded the dawn of a new India, as the British colonial rule withdrew, allowing the subcontinent to breathe the air of freedom. Yet, in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, the air was thick with uncertainty. The state, predominantly Muslim, was under the rule of Maharaja Hari Singh, a Hindu ruler. Geographically positioned adjacent to Pakistan, it became a sensitive and volatile region. The advancing tribal militias and irregular Pakistani forces posed an imminent threat.
