NIT Srinagar announces winter vacations

Srinagar: Amid the row over a social media post, National Institute of Technology (NIT) -Srinagar on Thursday declared winter vacation.

It also asked students to vacate hostels with immediate effect.

“Pursuant to declaration of Winter Vacation for students w.e.f 30.11.2023 vide Order No. 60 of 2023 issued under endorsement number NITS/R/23/600 dated 30.11.2023 all hostel boarders (Boys and Girls) are instructed to vacate the hostels with immediate effect”, a circular issued today by the Dean Students Welfare read.

The winter vacations were announced in middle of the ongoing semester exams.

Classwork at NIT was suspended since Wednesday after protests broke out over an social media post by a non local student which allegedly hurt the religious sentiments.

Amid fear of protests, the authorities also suspended Classwork in Islamia College of Science and Commerce Hawal in Srinagar on Thursday. The college had witnessed protests on the issue on Wednesday.

“ Classwork of all semesters and internal examination, including T-series shall remain off and will be rescheduled from December 1,” a notice issued by Islamia College Hawal read. It added that backlog examinations of 3rd semester shall be conducted as per schedule.

J&K Police has already filed a case for promoting religious enmity between communities against a student of the NIT for the social media post.
