Pak: Polio virus found in environmental samples

Islamabad: The polio virus has been detected in the environmental samples from five districts in Pakistan, according to the country’s Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination.

The virus was detected in three samples from two districts of southwest Baluchistan province, two from two districts in northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and one from the southern port city of Karachi, the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

The ministry said that the surveillance system of the polio program is very strong as the country has been striving to eradicate polio.

In this regard, an integrated strategy has been formulated in high-risk areas of polio, it said.

The health ministry underlined that parents must give their children a polio vaccine during every polio immunization campaign.

According to the World Health Organization, Pakistan is one of the two polio-endemic countries in the world along with its neighbour Afghanistan.

This year, Pakistan reported six polio cases, said the health ministry.
