NATO has no plans to become global alliance, add new members in Indo-Pacific: US Envoy

Washington: NATO does not plan to become a global alliance or add new members from the Indo-Pacific region, but will work with its partners from the region to resolve a range of security challenges, US Permanent Representative to NATO Julianne Smith said on Monday.

“Does it [NATO] have aspirations to become a global alliance and add new members in the Indo-Pacific? Absolutely not. That’s not the plan. Our Indo-Pacific partners don’t have an interest in joining the alliance, and the alliance is not looking to go global. But what we see is increased utility in working together with our friends in the Indo-Pacific on a number of shared security challenges,” Smith said during a discussion hosted by Georgetown University in Washington.
